Deca Durabolin (Nandrolone Decanoate)


Deca is an exceptionally popular and well-loved anabolic steroid, which is a combination of the compound Nandrolone attached to a decanoate ester. It was first developed in the very early 1960's, with Organon introducing it to the market in 1963. As soon as it hit the market (despite being created for the purposes of medicine, such as treating wasting diseases) it became a big hit with bodybuilders for the simple fact that it induced muscle mass gains and aided strength quite significantly. Despite the introduction of a short ester version of Nandrolone (phenylpropionate), the longer-ester version has always remained a favourite amongst those looking to add serious size and mass.
 

What is Deca?


Nandrolone is classed as a 19-nortestosterone steroid (often shortened to 19-nor). It differs from straight testosterone by the fact it doesn't have a carbon atom at the 19th position (unlike testosterone). You would think that should a small change in chemical structure would not have a huge impact upon the compound, but even this tiny change creates a very unique anabolic steroid. Its anabolic rating is greater than that of testosterone (125 compared to 100), yet its androgenic rating is significantly less (37 compared to testosterone's 100), which is partly down to the fact that the 5-alpha-reduced version of Nandrolone - DHN - is a lot less potent than the 5-alpha-reduced version of testosterone, namely DHT. DHN is so weak that that Nanadrolone itself is actually androgenically more potent than it, which is unheard of for 5-alpha-reduced substrates. For these reasons it is seen a being milder than most other steroids, although whether it actually is (in terms of internal effects) is debatable. It has low estrogen conversion at around 20% that of testosterone, however it doesn't interact with the progesterone receptor and therefore can cause side effects along this pathway.
 

How does Deca affect the body?


​​​​​​​As is the case with most other anabolic steroids, Deca increases protein synthesis, promote increased levels of IGF-1 and reduces the action of glucocorticoid hormones. It directly impacts upon nitrogen levels within the muscle by increasing them, which in turn boosts the levels of protein synthesis with the muscle itself. Studies have shown Deca to do this to a greater extent than most other steroids and when you consider that muscle fibers are 15% nitrogen you can see how important this is.
